Selection Optimiser

Basic functional description

Antibes Automated Allocation Optimiser optimises the selection of magazines within each individual retailer, is based on a combination of Business Rules and Advanced Statistics Models. It allows you to define and modify the Business Rules that set the targets and limitations for the optimisation algorithm in a very flexible way. It is also possible to have rules for a group of products, products, retailer chains or even a single retailer.

Optimisation is based on target values. These are a combination of:

  • Number of copies sold for each magazine issues
  • Number of copies sold per time unit

Limiting business criteria, such as:

  • Space limitations
  • Selection limitations – suitable balance between categories, exclusion of particular categories/products etc

  • More uniform criteria for selection decisions across all areas, outlet chains etc. This is made explicit by the Business Rules increased ability to implement changes

Allocation Optimiser

Basic functional description

  • Optimises the number of copies to be delivered to each individual retailer, per each magazine and issue
  • Is based on a combination of Business Rules and advanced Statistics Models
  • Allows to define and modify the Business Rules that set the targets and limitations for the optimisation algorithm

Optimisation model is based on the following components

  • Seasonal Variation Index estimation – weekly index for each retailer/magazine pair
  • Intrinsic Demand estimation – average demand for each magazine in a given outlet
  • Modified Demand estimation – for each magazine in a given outlet, the intrinsic demand plus the current sales trend of each magazine and seasonal variation index
  • Distribution calculation – for each magazine issue in a given outlet, calculate the optimal number of copies to be distributed, based on the Modified Demand estimation and Business Rules

Business Rules include

  • Desired business target (number of unsold copies, or desired service level)
  • Campaign exceptions
  • Model flexibility parameters (e.g. level of sales causing the magazine to be dropped)

Business benefits

  • Increased service level
  • Minimised customer dissatisfaction and lost sales due to issue-sold-out incidents by using anadvanced optimisation model which creates an accurate model for demand
  • Lowered number of returned copies
  • Reduced unnecessary distributions leading to returned copies

Allocation Simulator

Basic functional description

Antibes Allocation Simulator gives wholesalers and magazine publisher’s decision-making on the total distribution per each number and down to each retailer. The simulation tool has the capability of carrying out various ”what if” analysis.

  • With a given distribution, what is the number/percentage of returned copies and the achieved service level?
  • Given a desired service level or % of returned copies, what should the distribution be?
  • What would be the business results, optimising distribution for a optimal combination of high service level and low number of returned copies

Allocation Simulator is based on the same modeling components as the Allocation Optimiser.

  • Seasonal Variation Index estimation – weekly index for each outlet/magazine pair
  • Intrinsic Demand estimation – average demand for each magazine in a given outlet
  • Modified Demand estimation – for each magazine in a given outlet, the intrinsic demand plus the current sales trend of each magazine and seasonal variation index

Competitive business benefits

  • More actionable information for wholesalers
  • More accurate, more actionable information on the business effect of distribution decisions for Marketing Managers
  • Improved communication of mutual business targets between magazine publishers, retailers, and wholesalers
